Rhinophyma, often referred to as the “alcoholic nose”, is a severe advanced form of rosacea.
It is often mistakenly associated exclusively with alcoholism, which may or may not be the cause of this disease.
It was named after the Greek words for nose (rhino and growth (phyma).
Rhinophyma can be diagnosed without testing, the diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy and path histology.
Rhinophyma progresses gradually, most often in the form of long-term acne that is a consequence of rosacea. It mainly occurs in men after middle age. Patients turn for help, both because of the unpleasant appearance and because of the difficulty in breathing. It can have a great negative impact on a person’s psychophysical condition.
How it is treated
Conservative therapy (oral antibiotics with topical metronidazole) can be used in the early stages of the disease. However, developed rhinophyma requires surgical treatment.
Surgery: The best known therapy for rhinophyma is nasal tissue Surgery.
The operation can be done with a Laser, a High Frequency Radiowave, an Ultrasonic knife, a scalpel and dermabrasion.
It is essentially a matter of carefully removing “unhealthy” surface layers by “shaving” to healthy tissue.
Laser and Radiowave surgery offer a significant advantage due to better visibility, accuracy and bleeding control.
After the intervention, the treated surface got a shaped and flatter appearance, but still the appearance of a scratch or abrasion (surface damage to the skin).
It takes patience in the healing process.
